One thing have not been able to instill in my 7 year-old daughter is a love for reading. She learned to read at age 4, but it has been a constant struggle to increase her comprehension and fluency. I know that the only way for her to improve these skills is by having a consistent reading time for her, but getting her to stick to a reading plan has not come without some serious griping and complaining.
I recently came across this idea of book bingo from 2 Love Learning. This way Lou can decide which books she is going to read and there is a goal and reward in place when she reaches these goals. I printed this free card for this version of bingo, but next time I will be using this one created by Shoregirl at 2 Love Learning.
Now you can see that we have not gotten too far yet, but at least Lou is now asking to read because she wants to color in her square. When she gets a bingo she will be able to get a prize from our prize bucket. I really need to restock this bucket because the last time I used it I was trying to encourage my 4 year-old daughter to use the potty better (didn't work, that's why it's still full). 2 Love Learning even put money in her prize bucket - a great idea!
What ways have you been able to successfully motivate a child who seems to have no interest?
